Tom Wiens is a seasoned entrepreneur and former Colorado state Senator and Representative. His diverse business background includes agriculture, communications, finance, hospitality, insurance, natural resources, real estate, recycling, retail, technology, behavioral and cyber security risk assessment. He is a get-it-done leader with real-world experience focused on results.
Tom is CEO of New West Capital, LLC, a private venture capital/venture catalyst firm that partners with select companies to help finance and turn ideas and technologies into businesses. Tom has assisted in the structuring and financing of hundreds of millions of dollars of transactions and has managed and integrated numerous business mergers and acquisitions in numerous industries. He has led successful planning, design, construction and financing of multiple projects and has been awarded US and International Patents and the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Tom is also chairman of Wiens Ranch Company Inc. which has developed a nationally known Quarter Horse breeding program, producing winners and two of the three Jewels of the Triple Crown of The National Cutting Horse Association. Tom has also been involved for many years in the commercial and registered cattle business.
Tom Served as both a Representative and a State Senator in the Colorado General Assembly. He was elected Chair of Senate Republican Caucus and served on committees including Business Affairs, Labor and Technology; Agriculture and Natural Resources; Transportation, Energy and Technology; Local Government and the Select Committee on Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.
He authored key pieces of legislation including first-of-its-kind school safety legislation that has become a national modal. Wiens helped develop the integration of the regional all-hazard emergency response structure in Colorado and because of his work advocating for Colorado’s wildfire initial air attack emergency preparedness, he is an honorary member of the Colorado State Fire Chiefs Association. He spearheaded State and Federal efforts to clean up a massive buildup of toxic wastewater at the Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel after years of neglect. He was a major force protecting citizen’s private property rights against unlawful condemnation from private toll road companies. For his many achievements, Wiens was named Legislator of the Year by the Independent Bankers Association, Guardian of Small Business by the NFIB and received the Common Sense Award from the Civil Justice League.
Tom earned his Bachelor’s degree of science from The American University, Washington, D.C., studied international economics at the University of Graz, Austria and earned his Masters of Divinity from Yale University. He served on the board of the Children’s Hospital Research Institute Foundation and as a director of the National
